Lady X Tournament

In one of the more exciting Championship games at the Lady X Tournament Millennium defeated Perry in an overtime thriller in which Tournament MVP Kassady Dixon delivered a last second assist to Sophomore Guard Mia Amundsen, who was able to drain a game winning 3 as time expired.  The matchup showcased the 2018 Champion vs the 2019 Champion.   While this year's tournament did not have all the perennials powers that it usually showcases, presumable due to it postponement from its June slot due to the the pandemic, it did not disappoint in terms of game play and excitement.  What follows are some take a ways that we have about the teams that made the Lady X Tournament a success in 2020.   Millennium (Finished #1 with an Overtime victory over Perry) is still talented.  They have a D1 committ in Kassidy Dixon (GCU) and a top 5 Freshman in Ellie Guiney.  However they are not still a defensive minded program. In the past the Tigers would hang their hat on defensive pressure that would sti

Pandemic based Scenarios for the AIA

Possible Season Scenarios due to Pandemic for AIA.

We take a look at what might happen to the Girls’ Basketball season due to the Pandemic and school closures. All the opinions here are just speculation on our part and should not be taken as fact.

Scenario 1.

We will start with the most disruptive. Fall sports get moved to winter, winter sports get moved to spring, spring sports get played in the fall. While this is unlikely since moves like this are likely to have been made already, most of the spring sports take place outdoors. Many leaders say that sports like baseball, softball, tennis, and track can be done with social distancing. This would then make football and girls volleyball be played in the winter and this the gyms would be full and unavailable for basketball.

It would give a full season to basketball starting in March. A full schedule can be held including tournaments and playoffs. The only thing that would change the time of year.

Scenario 2.

We could see this happening. In order to complete a season in the winter, the AIA shortens the season to only region games. They cancel all tournaments such as Nike TOC, Miner Webster Thanksgiving Tournament, Chandler Prep Holiday Classic, Moon Valley Thanksgiving Tournament and others. They decide to hold a playoff tournament in February. Because they stop all non-region games Max Preps does not have enough games to make Power Point rankings. Because of this they run either a region tournament and take the top 4 finishers to the playoffs, or they allow all teams to make the playoffs and each conference has 46 playoff spots.

This could be good for some teams who get a chance to make the playoffs for the first time in a long time. It could also affect teams who use freedom games to get ready for the playoffs due to weak region competition. Will those teams be ready when they reach the playoffs?

The season in this scenario might not start till January as Fall sports would have been pushed back due to the pandemic.

Scenario 3.

This is the worst-case scenario in our opinion. The AIA cancels the entire seasons. Schools will not hold games. The only basketball that is played is on the club side for kids that can pay to play on these teams.  Club tournaments will pop up all over and parents will drive their kids all over the State and Southwest. There will be no state championships and no POY and all region teams. For those that like club this might be an ideal scenario, but if you like the high school experience then this would end this.

While some of these scenarios seem far-fetched and unlikely, they are a possibility.  We could see any of them happening, or even a hybrid of some of these ideas that are put out here.  Hopefully by the end of October, the Pandemic will have subsided and the AIA Girls Basketball season will not be affected.

4A Contender Sahuaro Tuscon

2020  runner  up went on an amazing run  to  even reach the final game. Their final game run included a  F inal   F our victory over defending champ  S hadow  M ountain.  However,  in the title game they fell to perennial power Seton Catholic  by  a  30-point  margin .  If the Cougars are to return   to  the title game in  ‘21,  they will need to fill in some  gaps  that were left  by  graduation  (9 Seniors) .  At this  at this point they have not been hit by the transfer bug.   The  Cougars  will be led by 2020 Gatorade  P layer of the  Y ear ,  Alyssa  Brown.   Her  31 points  a  game and ten  rebounds  made her the premiere  guard  in 4A, if not the state.  In 21 she will be asked  to  reproduce these numbers and add to her six assists again  In  order to get other players on  the team involved in the scoring totals. Her ability to get in the paint  and  score at will makes her a tough guard  for most  teams .    O ne would think that she would see  a lot  of box this season , b ut

4A Contender: Seton Catholic

Seton Catholic has been nothing short of dominant in 4A.   In 2020 they went undefeated and captured the State Title, downing Tucson Sahuaro by a wide margin.   In 2019, they made it all the way to Championship game, losing a close one to Shadow Mountain.   Prior to that they have had multiple titles and title game appearances dating back at least a decade.   With no seniors on the ’20 team they seem to be ready to pick up right where they left off in March.   The Sentinels will be led in ’21 by junior guard Lexi McNabb.   She averaged over 10 points a game last season, and has the ability to up that to 15 or 16 in ’21.   Her athleticism and speed make her hard to guard.   Her on the ball defense make her a great all-around player.   Along with McNabb, is junior guard Sasha Daniel.   Her ability to get in the lane and get her teammates open is uncanny.   She finds shooters and set them up nicely.   Look for her assists and points per game to rise from 3 and 10 respectfully.   Seton
