Lady X Tournament

In one of the more exciting Championship games at the Lady X Tournament Millennium defeated Perry in an overtime thriller in which Tournament MVP Kassady Dixon delivered a last second assist to Sophomore Guard Mia Amundsen, who was able to drain a game winning 3 as time expired.  The matchup showcased the 2018 Champion vs the 2019 Champion.   While this year's tournament did not have all the perennials powers that it usually showcases, presumable due to it postponement from its June slot due to the the pandemic, it did not disappoint in terms of game play and excitement.  What follows are some take a ways that we have about the teams that made the Lady X Tournament a success in 2020.   Millennium (Finished #1 with an Overtime victory over Perry) is still talented.  They have a D1 committ in Kassidy Dixon (GCU) and a top 5 Freshman in Ellie Guiney.  However they are not still a defensive minded program. In the past the Tigers would hang their hat o...

6A Contender: Sandra Day O'Conner

Sandra Day O’Conner has been knocking on the door for years.  Five straight trips to the playoffs, several appearances in the quarterfinals, and multiple 20 wins seasons has the Eagles believing they can challenge Valley Vista, Hamilton, and region foe Pinnacle in 6A.  If they are going to do it, they will need some things to go their way and their returning stars to soar to new heights.
O’Conner might have the deepest team returning in 6A, with their top 4 scorers and 5 of the top 6.  They will need to roll over their wealth of experience and toughness to take the team to the next level.  Elle Walker, a 41% shooter from deep, will help stretch the floor for guards like Sophomore Mak Snyder.   O’Conner implemented a nasty full court press in the past and will need to use its team speed to envelop opposing guards and force turnovers.  Senior Paris Atuahene will be a major part of getting those easy buckets off of turn overs.  Her quickness and top end speed should allow for easy steals and deflections versus other teams’ guards.
After a 9-win increase from 2019 to 2020, the Sandra Day O’Conner Eagles are poised to make a deep run in the 6A playoffs this year.  Their projector is definitely on its way up.  If the Eagles are to make waves out of the North Valley, they are going to lean on a their guard play in  21.  These guards will need to use their ability to get in the lane to score and get their teammates open.  Their quickness on both ends of the court will be needed if the Eagles are able to make it into the Final 4 and beyond.
Junior Jocelyn Erickson will be asked to control the middle and dominate the boards.  The big question is will she be able to control the paint at just 5’10”?  If she can, then she will give her team a fighting chance in 6A. in addition to Erickson O’Conner will need stellar play from Senior Patience Like.  Her size at 5’8” and guard skills will be well served as she will need to score and guard other teams posts.  Good news is that outside of Valley Vista, most teams don’t have multiple posts on the floor at once in 6A.
The biggest questions surrounding the Eagles going into 2020-21 is their size.  With guards that are smaller than 5’6” will they be able to be pesky enough to bigger guards to force turnovers and get easy office?  Will Coach Danny Soliman be able to get his team over the hump and make it to a Final 4 in 6A?  His teams have made the playoffs every year since 2015, will 2021 be the year they make it to the Championship?

4A Contender: Seton Catholic

Seton Catholic has been nothing short of dominant in 4A.   In 2020 they went undefeated and captured the State Title, downing Tucson Sahuaro by a wide margin.   In 2019, they made it all the way to Championship game, losing a close one to Shadow Mountain.   Prior to that they have had multiple titles and title game appearances dating back at least a decade.   With no seniors on the ’20 team they seem to be ready to pick up right where they left off in March.   The Sentinels will be led in ’21 by junior guard Lexi McNabb.   She averaged over 10 points a game last season, and has the ability to up that to 15 or 16 in ’21.   Her athleticism and speed make her hard to guard.   Her on the ball defense make her a great all-around player.   Along with McNabb, is junior guard Sasha Daniel.   Her ability to get in the lane and get her teammates open is uncanny.   She finds shooters and set them up nicely.   Look for her assists and po...

6A Contender: Xavier College Prep

Back to Back Title Game appearances has put Xavier College Prep in the conversation every year, to win a 6A championship.   Coming off of a 18-11 season in 2019-20 and a no. 10 seed in the state playoffs, the Gators will lean on young stars and a mix of veteran returnees.   In 2018, Xavier made it all the way to title game, falling to Valley Vista.   In 2019, they returned to the final game, falling to Hamilton, in 2020, the Gators fell to upstart Westwood of Mesa, in the round of 16.   2020-21 could be the year that Head Coach Jennifer Gillom breaks through and bring home the Golden Ball trophy.   The Gators will need good play from their young leaders in 20-12.   Sophomore Mia Davis has unique size and skill for a guard.   She was the 2 nd leading scorer on the 19-20 team at just over 9 points a game.   Her ability to get to the hoop and distribute the ball on offense will be key to Xavier’s success in 20-21.   At her size, 6’1” she wil...
